Getting dressed and on our way to a formal Hindu ceremony in Delhi. How is it, that the culturally appropriate attire, even as a white American, happens to be an uncomfortable silk salwar kameez- bright turquoise, beaded in gold and a dupatta (shawl) that weighs about 6lbs worth of embellished sparkle (and don’t forget the necessary gold jewelry adorning every possible part of my body). And my husband, born and bred Indian, is expected to wear a western business suit, plain and simple. Quite the couple we are. Somehow in this patriarchal country men were free to develop their dress along with their views, education and rational beliefs while the women’s rights and customs were lost somewhere in their 5 yards of sari fabric (and in one of the hottest countries in the world). So women continue using the same stick brooms invented hundreds of years ago, keep the same submissive quiet demeanor on the street and are still subjected daily to archaic violent acts from their male counterparts (I’m sure you’ve all seen the continuous rape coverage here in Delhi). So as I wear this ridiculously foreign outfit I will remember an older man who once complained to me “women these days don’t worship their husbands as gods like they did in the older days” and will sympathise with every Indian woman who has had to struggle against so much more than I can even fathom.

“You look sickly” is what I have heard the past three times I have seen particular Indian family members. Not because I am actually sick, but I am assuming because I am not wearing any makeup or jewelry and I’m naturally pale. How is it, that in this culture if you aren’t wearing gobs of eyeliner, mascara, bush and red lipstick you are labeled “sickly”?? In fact, I AM healthy and happy, thank you very much. And MY DNA happens to be expressed by pale skin (which means some blue-ish tint under my eyes-heaven forbid!), light eyelashes (in fact they are blonde at the ends) which frame my beady blue eyes, and pale lips and cheeks unless I have been out in the sun. Why is it that the widespread cultural norm is to have hyper feminized features- red lips, pink checks and of course super dark eyes and long eyelashes (even look at cartoon versions of animals- minnie mouse, etc). SO basically you’re telling me I have to have hyper “feminine” looks to be “healthy”? What kind of message are we sending the girls out there- basing our self esteem on how feminine we can falsely appear? I happen to love myself without makeup (and a balance of feminine/masculine characteristics), and I am still surprised that even in the West few women want to put themselves out there publicly without their shield of chemicals on their faces- few exceptions are Tilda Swinton and the fashion power-house Kelly Cutrone. How about a women who has deeply come into her own power, without a fake exterior to make others think she is “pretty/healthy”? As you can see this infuriates me- my own health and responsibility to take care of myself is completely tied to the chemical powder and gunk on my face?! Why can’t Indians see that women’s faces come in all colors. And doesn’t anyone else see that painting our faces everyday to go out in the world very much resembles a tribe painting their faces for war? Or adorning themselves with heavy shells, beads and stones? This whole face-coloring cultural expectation is a little over due, in my opinion.
